This was one for the books! 🐾

Mike, Rachel, and Annie headed back to school for Career Day at Noble Intermediate, and what an incredible experience it was. The event brought together a wide range of professionals, from police officers to your very own Woof Works trainers, all sharing what they love most about their work.

We’re truly honored to have been part of such a meaningful day, helping students explore different career paths right here in their community.

Mike and Rachel had the chance to present to four fantastic groups of students and their inspiring teachers. Mike gave a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to own a business and how Woof Works Training got its start. Rachel shared her journey from being a client to becoming a trainer herself—proof that passion can turn into purpose.

Together, they talked about what daily life as a dog trainer looks like, the importance of engagement, training fundamentals, and yes… keeping up with your homework (dog training homework, of course 😉).

Doggie squats are a great exercise for building stability, strength, and providing both physical and mental stimulation 💪🧠

This movement promotes hip and joint health while strengthening the hind legs through controlled sit-to-stand transitions.

Using a foot target — like a bowl, or for more advanced pups, a wobble disc — can help your dog better understand and process the task.

As your dog progresses, you can increase the challenge by adding elements like Cato boards to improve balance and body awareness 🐕

Teaching a solid “stand” not only supports this exercise but also strengthens overall obedience. Once your dog becomes fluent, you can begin mixing in sits and downs for an added challenge 🔁

We’re excited to work with you and your dog! Your first session is all about understanding, communication, and building the foundation for success. Dogs tend to be more receptive to training in a new space, and we have all of the necessary equipment for your dog to learn best. Most sessions will take place at our facility, but we’ll eventually test your dog’s training and/or behavior changes in the real world or at home.

Crate training is one of the most valuable skills you can teach your dog—when done correctly.

Hi, I'm Rachel, one of the trainers at Woof Works.

I started out as a client because my dog Paisley experienced multiple attacks from off-leash dogs. This left her with severe fear-based reactivity toward other dogs and people. My once playful and loving puppy panicked during every encounter. Judgmental stares from strangers and Paisley's reactivity made walks very stressful, so we began avoiding the outside world.

One of the hardest parts wasn't just Paisley's behavior — it was my own anxiety. Every time we left the house, I expected the worst. That mindset only made things harder for both of us.

Before finding Woof Works, we tried working with another trainer, but unfortunately their approach made things worse and left us feeling even more helpless.

Mike's guidance and support were truly life-changing. Instead of judgment, we were welcomed and supported. We started with the basics — eye contact, engagement, and building a stronger relationship through training. We then progressed to muzzle training and behavior modification, and capitalized on the training foundation we built. My boyfriend and I attended weekly sessions and stayed consistent at home.

Progress doesn't always happen as fast as we hope, but with patience and the right support, incredible things can happen. Instead of avoiding, we went to work and started seeking out real-world training opportunities. Paisley's progress has been amazing, and Mike asked if I would consider becoming a trainer for Woof Works. I happily accepted and can now pay it forward with other clients who struggle with reactive dogs. Paisley also helps out during sessions, helping dogs relax enough to look to their owners for guidance.

Through training, advocacy, management, and complete muzzle training, Paisley's life may look a little different from most dogs, but she is one of the happiest dogs I know. She loves walks, swimming, playtime, and spending time with her pack.

Trainer Favorites: Rachel & Paisley’s Go-To Post-Walk Activity 🐾

Does your dog still have leftover energy after a walk? One of Rachel and Paisley’s favorite post-walk activities is “Find It” — a scent-work enrichment game that adds mental stimulation to your dog’s daily routine.

To start, Paisley is sent to her place and put into a down-wait. If your dog struggles with impulse control or holding a wait, you can absolutely use a crate instead.

Next, Rachel hides some of Paisley’s favorite treats around a designated room. Once everything is hidden, Rachel gives her “break” cue — and Paisley gets to work searching!

When dogs use their noses, especially to find something specific, they’re using a huge amount of brain power. Pairing a walk (physical exercise) with a “Find It” game (mental enrichment) helps create a balanced outlet for energy.

After her walk and her scent work session, Paisley is more than ready for a well-earned midday nap 💤

95% of our clients say they want bulletproof recall.

In reality? Only about 2% truly follow through.

Reliable recall is one of the hardest skills to teach your dog. There are so many variables that affect success:
• Not enough practice
• Lack of motivation
• Owner limitations
• And the biggest challenge of all — distractions

Recall isn’t just “come when called.” It has layers.

We start inside with zero distractions.
Then gradually introduce controlled distractions.
Then long-line work.
Then low-distraction outdoor sessions.
Then we slowly raise the difficulty.

Each stage builds clarity, motivation, and reliability.

One of our favorite drills to build drive is restrained recall.

This drill uses two people:
• One person restrains the dog by holding their harness.
• The handler (the target) stands a few feet away.

Both people hype the dog up intentionally. We want the dog practically bursting out of the harness to get to their handler.

When released, the dog explodes toward the handler — and that’s where the party happens.

At the end of our recalls, we bring back engagement work: spins, jumps, play — whatever that dog LOVES.

The goal?
We want the dog to believe that coming back to their handler is the best thing in the world.

Because when recall feels better than the distraction…
That’s when it becomes reliable.

Meet Petey 🐾

Petey is a handsome pit bull with a rare spinal condition called Subarachnoid Diverticulum.

In dogs, Subarachnoid Diverticulum is a fluid-filled pocket within the spinal meninges that compresses the spinal cord. This compression can lead to chronic, progressive neurological dysfunction, weakness (paresis), and even incontinence.

In our videos, you may notice the arch in Petey’s back and the way he occasionally drags his paws—both are effects of his condition.

Because of this, Petey has several limitations in his daily life:
• No jumping
• No rough play
• Careful movement management

Even with these restrictions, Petey is truly one of the most fit dogs we have ever worked with.

Petey originally came to us for basic obedience and leash walking. Alongside those goals, we’ve also been focusing heavily on safe mobility and body awareness work, including:

• Bowing
• Walking over objects
• Weave poles
• Front paws on an oil pan (with pivots)
• BOSU ball work
• Engagement exercises

Petey is a perfect example that limitations do not define ability—and with the right structure and support, dogs like him can thrive 💙

Meet Jack! 🐾✨

A fun-loving, energetic puppy with a serious passion for work. His training goals include:

When Jack first started, he greeted everyone with jumping joy— owners and trainers alike. Fast forward to today, and Jack now comes in ready to work immediately. He even ignores beloved trainer Mike when invited into his space (now that’s focus)‼️

Jack has taken a strong liking to our engagement activities, building impressive eye contact and enthusiasm. His love for working has made the early stages of recall a breeze, flying in like a bullet and giving his all to every jump and spin. Watching his progress has been an absolute pleasure, and we’re so excited to continue helping Jack grow into the best pup he can be!

Jack’s owners, Patty & Mike, stood out from the very first session. Their dedication to Jack’s training has been nothing short of inspiring. Over the past few months, Patty has carried much of the at-home workload while Mike has been recovering from back surgery. Despite this, both Patty and Mike consistently ask thoughtful questions during sessions and we’ve even caught Mike practicing handling mechanics right from his seat 👏🏻

Their hard work at home is clearly paying off, with tremendous improvements seen at every session.

🐾 Trick of the Month: Down

Teaching a down is about patience & clarity. Try these steps at home and tag us with your result! 🐶

1️⃣ Hold a treat slightly above your dog’s head and slowly lure it down toward the floor. As soon as their elbows touch the ground, mark the behavior and reward!

2️⃣ Once your dog is successful with step one, take a step back and practice the motion without food in your hand.

3️⃣ Teach the verbal!

4️⃣ Mix it up! Add other skills like “down” & “sit” in different orders so your dog doesn’t start anticipating what comes next. Adding a third command can be helpful to get your dog to stop offering other behaviors.

🌟 BONUS ROUND: Once your dog is comfortable in a down, you can build from there — rolling to the side or beginning a roll over are great next steps!

🐾 Client of the Month: Bart & Allyson

Bart came into training with a few big goals:
• Less reactivity on leash
• Fewer barky, demanding behaviors
• More focus and impulse control

His handler, Allyson, showed up with a clear list of what she wanted to work on — and that’s one of the things we appreciate most about her.

But here’s the interesting part: sometimes what you think you need to focus on is only the starting point.

You might say, “I want my dog to be less reactive.” Great. But how do we get there? By building impulse control, strengthening engagement, and addressing the pieces underneath the behavior.

Training isn’t ever a straight line of 1, 2, to 3. It’s 1–100, often out of order, revisited again and again as your dog learns, grows, and moves through different environments.

Allyson leaned into that process — trusting the work, being open to the unexpected, and staying committed to Bart’s progress every step of the way.

Follow these steps:

1️⃣ Start with an enthusiastic dog — Annie’s excitement is exactly what we want!

2️⃣ Grab high-value treats (the good stuff).

3️⃣ Slowly lure your dog into a spin, with their nose following your hand all the way around. Once completed, mark with a “yes” or click your clicker, then reward!

4️⃣ Once they understand the motion, speed up the lure.

5️⃣ Practice in both directions.

6️⃣ Then, add your verbal cue and fade the hand signal.
